929 Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir swap
« on: October 06, 2012, 05:49:26 PM »
I am swapping to the 93 ABS 929 BMC, but don't want to use the stock MC res. Does anyone know where to buy just the 93 929 reservoir?

My stock MC res is old and cracked and I would rather not JB weld it.  I would rather not buy a new FD res because then I would have to put a rubber cap on the clutch nipple since the Wilwood CMC has it's own res.

I have searched on ebay and parts places and for some reason I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Even if someone knows where to buy just the FD BMC reservoir  I will buy that. Everywhere only wants to sell a whole new FD BMC with reservoir for $190... screw that.

From my research, the reservoir is the expensive part and really isn't sold separate.  (I believe Mazda used to sell them, for almost the same price as a whole master/reservoir cost)

I got lucky and got a nice 929 master and booster from a junk yard.  I then proceeded to break the reservoir and have been down this same road.

I ended up getting a used FD reservoir with the hole in the side.

You guys need to get to a junkyard.
There are only a couple of brake parts makers that all the Japanese OEMs source from, interchangeability is quite extensive.
Lose the fixation on the model you pulled the MC from (Mazda 929) and concentrate instead on the MC itself...it's probably a Nissan, Nabco or Sumitomo part and probably used on a number of different models (from different manufacturers even, so don't just look at Mazdas).

The reservoir port spacing tends to be consistent through a product line and I've been very successful mixing/matching reservoirs with master cylinders to get the arrangement I'm after.
Mitsubishi was fond of remote reservoirs that can be very useful to a semi-custom install. The MC hose fittings will pop right into many different masters (remember, the reservoir is under no pressure, many are retained simply with the rubber port grommets- pop in, pop out) and give you some really interesting mounting options).
An example:

I must either not be looking hard enough or in the right junk yard.  I went and looked under hood after hood looking for a suitable replacement.  Most of what I fould was either designed to be mounted to the firewall at an angle, or some other jackass had already pulled the reservoir off incorrectly and left it there broken.

Great post Clocker, I will need to go check out a junkyard when I get the time.

Luckily I had someone offer to sell me a spare they had on rx7club so I think I will just go that route for now... The remote setup seems pretty neat though and something I will consider in the future.
