1986 RHD Mazda RX7 2JZ Turbo Build
« on: July 19, 2018, 01:43:08 PM »
Hi my name is Joe Maddox,  I've been building rotary engines and RX7 cars for a little over 15 years now. I bought my 1st RX7  In 1999.
I have always wanted to build a 2jz. Now that the rotary engine is on its way out ,parts are getting hard to find And everybody's getting cut throat, I decided to go ahead and get started on this project.

I have an extra right hand drive front clip from a 1991 Mazda RX7. I also just picked up in 1986 base model non sunroof Mazda RX7. It was a previous track car, the owner had put a small block Chevy V8 into it. The race team had taken out the roll cage that was welded in and they had cut up the core support for aftermarket radiators. So the car was already cut up and ready to do a conversion for the track.

I found a nice sc300  I would like to look into for the motor, and I will be using eBay, forums, Amazon and my local craigslist in hopes to find everything I will need to make a 5 speed Turbo.

I have built many cars like this before just none of them were 2jz.  This is my last right hand drive conversion project it turned out very well.

I would love to see all of the previous people who have built 2jz FC rx7s.  I've poked around in I have found quite a few build threads, I would be intrested in hearing what the community thinks was the cleanest for most successful build.

Started on the rhd conversion.  I did not have the original cross member, only the rack and pinion, so I'm going to have to create a new cross member from 2 old ones. I started mocking up in cleaning up the to cross members to make the right hand drive cross member for the conversion.

After grinding everything down thoroughly cleaning everything up,  My friend came over and lay down few tack welds for me.  After a cleaning it up again I had it redy to paint and through a fresh coat of paint on it. Turned out very well!

You probably know but the 2JZ-GE in the SC 300 you mentioned is not the same as the 2JZ -GTE in the Supra or Japanese Aristo. I think it’s missing oil squirters which some high HP built motor Supra’s remove anyway.  Also the head is really different and high compression.

You probably knew that but figured I could spout out my research I did as I have the hots for a GTE swapped GS300 as my family grocery getter.  Looking forward to the build!!

It sounds like an sc300 2J still has the same block, crank, and rods as the turbo motor.  Sounds like you could source the head and then change pistons?  I know alot of people go 1JZ as well since its a little cheaper than a 2jz gte

2JZ NA-T builds are becoming pretty popular in japan and here in the states, essentially using the NA 2JZ-GE engine and turbocharging it using a forward facing intake manifold (FFIM) and GE specific exhaust manifold (exhaust flange pattern is different between 1JZ, 2JZ-GTE, and 2JZ GE. Id recommend Fuse Fabrication if you go this route as he built a 2JZ FC and can make a badass manifold to fit that engine and chassis. I run his manifold and love it.

Your other option would be to build a 1.5JZ which uses the 2JZ GE bottom end and a 1JZ cylinder head. This would make life easier when buying an exhaust/intake manifold and tons of info on this setup can be found online as well.

If you are looking for 2JZ FC swap specific info, i tried to be as detailed as possible in my build thread on here. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I know just enough to be dangerous lol. I'm new to this swap and will gladly take all the feedback and advice I can get. Knew there was a few differences. Was going to use the lexus sc300 as a mock up motor to get it all in and going. I will upgrade to a better block after that!

Amazing info! I'll have to check out fuse for sure! I'm going to look at your build thread to get an idea of what is in store for me! Thanks!

Thank you! It was from my old rhd. It wrecked and I bought a new one. Finally decided to do something with all the rhd parts and started this build! So it will have the same interior.
