Question about LS1 wiring in FD
« on: July 04, 2016, 06:18:16 PM »
Hi, so I have a pretty basic question. My FD RX7 is automatic. I purchased all the manual wiring harnesses when I was going to rebuild my rotary, but I have decided to just go ahead and LS swap it. My question is, do I need to convert my wiring to the manual wiring, or can I just use my automatic wiring? I know I will need the LS engine harness, but I am referring to the dash harness and the rest of the harnesses. I have spent a few hours not trying to find a link I remember explaining all this, but I have had zero luck in finding it. Can anyone verify if I can just use my automatic wiring? Thanks!

We swapped an auto and once you remove the rotary engine loom it is almost identical.  We even used one of the auto gear indicators as a MIL light.

Be prepared for a few late nights, the FD wiring was designed by someone with a warped sense of humour

Yeah, there are wires that go from behind the dash, all the way around the engine bay, back to behind the other side of the dash.  I mean, seriously, WTF?

My car was originally an auto. There are no special considerations over a manual.

Some tips.
1). I strongly suggest printing out the FSM wiring

http://www.rotaryheads.com/PDF/3rd_gen/Mazda%20Service%20Manuals/1993%20Factory%20Service%20Manuals/(Z)Wiring_Diagram.pdf

2). Label the wires as you add (or alter) to the factory looms. I use masking tape and a label printer. Also note these changes on the wiring diagrams.

3). Use quality connectors, relays wires and tools.

4). Do searches on the net and youtube so you learn how to do a good job so you do not end up with a heap of "rats nests" that you can not trace if things should go wrong.

5). Do not be afraid to start again and re wire if you are not happy with the job.
