Hey Wicked,

Neat stuff you're playing with there.  Couple questions: What are the two columns of VaraRam temp data above?  Can you describe a bit more about what you mean about how this would let us add radiator height?  If you stand the radiator up I would think the core height would have to decrease but maybe I'm not picturing this right...  At the same time, if we could add an inch that would be pretty damn sweet for the fan setup I'm eyeballing.  At least by eyeball, this looks physically larger than the K&N RP 5135 most folks are running.  As Exidous noted, Ronin is starting a radiator design effort so I'm watching/researching with a great deal of interest these days.

Joel - The only difference in the two columns of Vararam data is just before/after the Sameberg reading.  I wanted to verify that the higher Sameberg reading weren't because of general heat soak after running the car for 20 minutes.   When i swapped the Vararam back in, i didn't let the car sit at all so this is worst case with heat soak.  I could probably do a much more controlled test but this was just to get some general data.

As for radiator height, I tried to take some pictures of the clearance:

Yes, you are correct that as you tilt the radiator up, it is going to get taller.  There is probably closer to 2" of clearance so I figured it would get taller and still have room for larger radiator.  You won't be able to tilt it up by a lot but even a little will give more clearance with the engine as well.  If you made a custom intake, this could probable be optimized further.

The physical size of the Vararam is roughly the same as the K&N filter we are running, just difference shape.

Let me know if you have any other questions or want more pictures.

I'm trying to figure out what is going on here.  Maybe I need to look closer at mine but I swear I can look up and see a filter on my Samberg unit.

Yes, you would be able to see the filter and it does have a direct path to the nose.  My thought is that the samberg unit is an open filter sitting directly next to the radiator and sandwiched between the condenser and radiator, meaning when at low speeds, it is pulling super heated air.  With the flat style filter and box, it is pulling ducted air from the nose meaning it will ultimately be cooler and could probably get somewhat of a ram-air effect if done properly....

The other reason for this would be to allow for a slightly more upright and larger radiator giving more cooling capacity.

The other thing I really like about this is that you should hopefully be more shielded from interference with the cooling fans.  MAF signal goes to crap when the fans turn on with the Samberg open filter.

Yes, this is definitely another main benefit.  I don't have a way to log my MAF signal so I don't really have a solid way to determine if it is making a difference.  I would say in general, low speed driveability might be slightly improved....

Oh I get it, your saying 'ducted' because this filter has a plastic shroud around it, vs just wide open of the samberg.  The one picture looks like about half the opening is covered by the AC condenser though?  So your plan is to slide them all back when you re-do your set up and then it will actually be able to breath through the Vara ram opening and be insulated from fans and heat with the plastic shroud.

I'm following now.  Very cool that it fits so well!
