LS6 road racing power steering pump
« on: February 01, 2015, 10:51:30 PM »
I have a 93 with a 2004 CTSV swap engine. Right now everything is completely stock for front accessories.

My question is what are you road racing guys using for power steering pumps? I know that my pump is over pressured/flow for the factory rack. It puts a lot of heat into the fluid and steering feel starts to fade on hot days street driving.

I've contacted turn one and KRC. Both companies have solutions, maybe there is another avenue.

Everything you listed is for LS1. I already spoke to Turn one and KRC.

I'm looking for an alternative or someone's feedback on a race pump they currently use.

The restrictor helps with steering feel, but doesn't address the heat into the fluid.

Well you may need to change the front accessories to F body, or Corvette as the LS1 power steering pump style is more popular. I dont know if the CTS-V is the same or not.

As for heat, you will undoubtedly need a power steering cooler.

I'm sure these guys have a solution.... prepare to bend over when you get the bill.  They are always overpriced.

Turn One and KRC were the only big players I found when I did all my research.

I picked the Turn One pump after reading several dozen or so positive reviews on LS1tech.  KRC sounds fine in their literature, but it was crickets in terms of actual track focused reviews I could find.   I did find a bunch of 4wd guys complaining about KRC though and that was enough to make my choice for me.  No complaints, and the road feel is great, but I haven't pushed mine hard enough to see if I'll need a cooler on track.

You will definitely need a cooler for track use regardless of which pump you choose. Fluid should be either Joe Gibbs or Redline power steering fluid as either can handle the heat. I have just installed the Turn One adjustable valve but have not had it out on track yet to give any feedback. I am a TurnOne fanboy from way back. It works.
I do love what I do!

Nothing good comes out of D3.

TurnOne has a CTS-v race PS pump but it is for the 2009-2014 car.

Another turn one pump owner and fan. Follow Bowtie's lead and get a cooler, I use a little 14 row mocal unit and have zero issues over several years now.

A cheap frame rail cooler can work very well as a power steering cooler too. You can drop it right in front of the radiator.

I have used a power steering cooler from a 90s ford ranger with good luck.

Stock Pontiac G8 GXP p/s pump with a small cooler works fine for me, street and track.  No reducer or anything else necessary.  Not too light, not too stiff.
