oil gauge is still not working.
« on: February 10, 2015, 10:04:31 AM »
I bought one of the kits that is suppose to make your factory oil pressure gauge work. I got it used from a member that ensured me it was a low mileage used part. I recently got to installing it and the needle now does come up but it doesnt move. I have a manual gauge on it right now and it will climb with the rpm like is should, but the factory gauge sits on about 40psi and doesnt move up or down from there. Is the sending unit bad? Also I have heard the the factory setup is highly inaccurate. Is this true? and if so is there a way to make it more accurate. I would like to get rid of the after market oil pressure gauge that I currently have in it now. thanks for any help.

what year? I think i heard somewhere that the s4s have a variable gauge and the s5s were just an idiot gauge which is either "good" or "bad"

Im still wondering about this. I really dont want to spend the money on a new sending unit if its just a idiot gauge. because that sender is about $100. Does anyone have a working oil gauge in their ls fd?

For my 93, I had to buy a OEM sender to get it working.  It's not on/off.  It moves with oil pressure changes as you would expect.  Friend bought a rockauto unit and it didn't work.  The oem sender has a resistance range that doesn't match any common aftermarket senders.  Forgot what the range was, but you can hook up a variable resistor to ground and the sender wire to check the gauge and measure resistance.

What would I be looking for when i test it? And is there a how to on how to test it? Is there a way to test the sending unit as well in case the gauge comes back good?
