General Tech / Re: 996 Porsche LS swaps
« on: February 08, 2015, 12:47:20 AM »
I forgot the power steering, most of them seem to use the stock, 3rd gen MR2 electric/hydraulic power steering pump to plumb into the Porsche rack.

General Tech / 996 Porsche LS swaps
« on: February 08, 2015, 12:46:00 AM »
Has anyone looked into these very much? I've done an FC/LM7 swap where I had fabbed/built it all myself, and was going down the route of an RX8/LS swap when I came across a few examples of these over on LS1tech. The 996's have poor reliability as far as the motors go. I'm sourcing one now with a blown motor. There is a kit, but it is very pricey for what you get.

Difficulties include:

Needs an adapter plate to use the stock Porsche trans: KEP makes an adapter plate/flywheel for LS swaps, uses stock Porsche clutch/PP.
996 uses drive by wire pedal: Rig up a custom pedal/cable or use later model ECM/harness.
Rear crash bar means you can't run any accessories besides the AC, crank and alternator: Needs electric water pump.
Only solution for motor mounts is basically a 1/2" aluminum motor plate, which is similar to the stock Porsche mounting though, and you still mount to rubber mounts similar to the Porsche mounting locations. The kits I've seen mount on top of the frame, compressing the mounts, while the stock Porsche hangs below. I would mount mine to hang below to help drop the drive train out from below like Porsche intended.

Thoughts?

Build Threads / Re: RX-8 6.0L T56 build
« on: August 21, 2013, 09:58:57 AM »
I've been working on this build for a few months now and have finally decided that its time to post up my progress so far. So here's a snapshot of what I've got going on:

2004 RX8
-Originally came with an automatic, 16" wheels, no sunroof, and the motor was busted.

All aluminum 6.0L from a 2007 Chevy Silverado
-I went through the motor. Put in new bearings, rings, LS9 cam, timing chain etc.

GTO T56
-I picked that up from Bowtie7 (Charlie is a great guy to do business with)

Hinson Mounting Kit, Headers, Exhaust, driveshaft

I bought the car with the intent of having something fun on the street, but can be used as a DD if needed. I plan to go into more details at a later time as I'm sure there will be some questions about the swap. As it stands, I have to finish up the wiring, mounting the clutch master cylinder, cooling system, air intake system, etc

How was dealing with Hinson on this? I noticed he stopped updating the page for this swap kit, and several people have had complaints about them in other areas. If I end up using any of his parts I would probably drive down there and buy it in person if that is even possible...

So is there a gxl brake master available? Or is one available now? I swapped the gxl brakes onto my car but still have the old master and my pedal is very squishy....

Someone has dibs on the master cylinder, if they change their mind I'll let you know.

Hey I just saw your message. You still have the car?

Yeah, I still have it. I've been out of the country for the last couple weeks but I'm back now. Let me know if you still need anything.

Found my E36 for my next swap...FC will be scrapped within a week after I pull the parts mentioned and any others I can think of. If anyone local needs any large cutout sheet metal sections for body repair let me know.

Does the master cyl come with a proportioning valve and the reservoir? If so i will take it..i dont need the booster though. zip code is 33909

Someone has spoken for the master already...not sure if they needed the reservoir or not, I'll ask. I'll still have the proportioning valve.
