Electronics / VSS, maybe Dakota Digital issue
« on: April 15, 2016, 05:07:13 PM »
Please help. After long time working out little issues, I was able to get the car out of the neighborhood for a drive. The L460e seems to not want to go into 4th sometimes, sometimes it does.  It stays in 3rd until the vehicle slows down, then down shifts, almost like the OD is off. By the way my OD button doesn't do anything. Sometimes it shifts fine. I get a code 97 VSS(4k) circuit output low. I have Dakota Digital which seems hooked up as per the sticky, with the exception of the output for the speedo is on #2 and my input wire is white, then goes into the PCM harness(haven't traced it yet).  ECM reads about 5mph more than the speedo at 20mph. Is the shifting and the code related? What should I check next? Is there a Dakota Digital write up specifically for LT1/l460e FC?

Electronics / Re: Car won't connect to scanner
« on: February 09, 2016, 04:30:27 PM »
Update on my situation. Still can't connect via ALDL using tunerpro rt, scan9495 or datamaster. Keeps saying no connection with PCM, but port is working. Got Innova 3123 OBD1 scanner and used the jump method from shoebox and that doesn't work either. used a jumpers from the pcm, still nothing, but I do get 5 volts on the serial and field service wires. When car idles no check engine light. Start driving around and it comes on. Idles for 5 min and the light disappears. Once the car worms up it starts to hesitate and miss here and there at random times. Sometimes it runs like a champ, sometimes starts to smoke whitish at idle. I am not loosing coolant, oil is clear, new plugs(spark tested on all cylinders), new gas, coil tested ok with a ohm meter. Last time it died and smoke came out of the intake. Haven't messed with it since then. I'm thinking is running rich. Any ideas? I really wished I can see what the sensors are seeing.

I ended up putting 225/45/17 on the front and it rides nice, no rubbing. The G35 wheels I got are 17x7.5 +30 offset on the front and back ones are 17x8 +33 offset. Turned out looking pretty good.[attachimg=1]

Not sure what the offset is. I will try to get the 225/45/17 on first since they are pretty much same overall diameter of the stock tire and see what happens. If it still rubs will try new struts, hopefully that fixes the issue. Do springs go bad/saggy? It seems like none of the part stores sells springs and everywhere else all you see is lowering springs.

Suspension/Brakes/Wheels / Front suspension/tire suggestion
« on: January 14, 2016, 09:07:17 AM »
I finally got the FC on the road and I have been battling front suspension issues. I got 225/50/17 tires on G35 wheels. They barely clear the springs in the front and are pretty much flushed with the fender so when I hit a slight bump they rub the fender. I also noticed the front travels up and down a lot more than the back. I have an inch between the tire and the fender so even rolling them won't help much. I am planning on going 225/40/17 because the tires are trash anyways but should I look into new shocks or springs? Does the weight of the LT1 has anything to do with it? Don't have the money for coilovers right now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just received the OBD2 to USB cable. I will play with it to figure out what is going on. My check engine light is not lighting up like it is supposed to either.

I guess 94 lt1's are obd1 pcm with obd2 connector. How do u pull codes out of that?

I finally got the car started. Runs fine until it gets warm, then shakes, stumbles and the RPM's are low. Fresh oil, spark plugs, but I have to change the gas in the tank since it is of unknown age. Decided to scan with a OBD2 scanner to see if there are any codes, but it keeps telling me it is unable to connect. I verified that I have 12V and good grounds to the OBD2 connector and it is wired at the right pins to the correct color wires from the LT1 harness. There is no check engine light that illuminates (don't know if it is even wired). How do I check the signal from the PCM?

Electronics / Re: Radiator fan relay/starter wire/random wires
« on: December 11, 2015, 08:31:51 AM »
Hooked up my lawn mower battery to test some stuff and here is what I figured out so far.
1. I got a new relay, the fused wire actually powers 2 relays under the glove box, which I haven't figured out what they control.
2. Purple wire goes to a relay, ran a wire from the ignition, tested the solenoid and it works.
3. two red wires, the one comes from the 100 amp fuse, other goes into the fuse box under the dash. The connectors fit a bus style fuse. I used a 20amp one, not sure if it is enough. What size should I use?
4. Found the temp sensor wire, it is yellow and red. Black with yellow I was talking about is 12v+ from the alternator to the main fuse box.
5. Spliced wires correspond to the signals from the ECU to the fan (low, high and ac). I have a one speed fan, so maybe that is why they are spliced together. I will see if it actually turns it on once I get it started and up to temp. just in case it doesn't work, I got a kit that will run the fan based on a temp switch, not ECU controlled. So the only question I have left is size of fuse for the wire from the driver side fuse box to the fuse box by the driver foot well.

I think I figured it out for the most part. We will see once I get a battery. All I haven't figured out is the two red wires by the fuse box. One comes from the fuse box and stops, the other goes in the driver side firewall. I will have to track it. In the process of sorting it out I found the L terminal (single red)on the alternator is cut. I have to find a 470 ohm resistor. Since radioshack is not around, who sells stuff like that, other than online? Where is a good place to get 12v ignition on in the engine bay(preferably passenger side)?

I got some questions, didn't do the swap, got the car half disassembled, just trying to put it back together. Here are my dilemmas:
(1) I got the car with blown head gaskets and I think the reason it happened in the first place is the fan relay. I have Hinson fan (2 wire) going to a relay with one of the wires burnt into it and two missing. I have a wire with a 30 amp inline fuse in the same vicinity. Where is each wire from the relay is supposed to go? Should I do a different set up since this one obviously failed. Part numbers and wire colors would be great if on hand. I found Taurus and double fan diagrams, nothing on single speed.
(2) Purple wire from the started is cut and all I know is it is supposed to go from ignition, through safety neutral switch, since it is automatic. Where and what color is the input?
(3) 2 red wires by driver side tower under fuse box. I have no idea what to do with them as they have a circle (cylinder) looking connectors.
(4) Black with yellow wire coming out by the brake booster (I think it is a temp sensor, just want to verify).
(5) 3 wires on pass side spliced together into 1 wire, no connector
I wanted to sort those out before getting a battery hooked up. Thank you for the input!

Thanks Lane! It is a airbag sensor for the right side, just have to figure out where it goes and where it plugs in. I will try to find the left one and go from there. Most likely in the front bumper somewhere.

Electronics / Part identification help

Good day! I have a 90 Rx-7 with LT1 that I am putting together. I did not take it apart, so I am kind of putting a puzzle together here. I have this part sitting in the trunk and not sure where it goes. The part number is mc34p89y04 but the last 3-4 characters are missing. It has a black arrow on it. The LT1 harness doesn't seem to have a plug for it, not sure if it is a Mazda part. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Greetings! I am new to the forum, live in Chesapeake Va. I have been looking at doing the RX-7 V-8 swap for a while. Stumbled across a 1990 RX-7 with seized LT1 and half taken apart with granny kit and turbo rear end(not sure if this is true). The only thing I don't like about the car is that is convertible. Ended up picking it up anyways. Bought another LT1, which I started putting in yesterday. I am very happy with the progress so far. What scares me is the electrical part. I am pretty sure I will need some help as there is at least a bunch of random wires that don't go anywhere and extra relays here and there, just dangling. Can't wait to get it running!
