Suspension/Brakes/Wheels / Wheels with Conical lug nuts
« on: May 08, 2017, 10:12:21 PM »
Quick question for everyone that has ran or is running wheels with open end conical lug nuts.

Have you guys ever had any issue with them? Do they hold up fine when launching at the track?

I'm looking into ordering some of the Jegs SSR wheels and from what I am seeing they all use conical lug nuts.

I am just worried that I may shear the wheel lugs when launching at the track on the Transbrake.

Yeah, I'm limited by the bottom end no matter what, so if I make 750 flywheel with 9 lbs of boost and a bad ass intake, or 10.5 lbs of boost and a stock 5.0 intake, it doesn't really matter.

But, but, it looked SOOOO good.  LOL.

I have a good friend who basically Dyno's his car (2014 Mustang) on my Mustang Dyno everytime he adds an upgrade to his motor, not only did we see good gains on the Cobra Jet intake, but the TQ/and HP curve changed dramatically.

I was actually surprised on the big difference! These Coyote motors make nice power!

His current power band stays linear from about 5500-7800 as opposed to dropping off at about 7100 with the stock intake. He does have all the supporting mods for the intake setup. TB , CAI , Headers, ID1000 (future FI plans) E85. Also his suspension and Drivetrain are setup to withstand 5K launches.

I dont have the numbers in front of me currently, but I do recall that he did not lose any TQ under 3K and Made 421 at about 7900.

With the Cobra Jet intake he says he just feels the car pulling and pulling so he had to add an LED shift light to stop from hitting the limiter.

May not help you much since you returned the intake but I figured Id share info with you.

I think you found the issue, that sucks.  In my experience with turbo 400s, we had about 0.090" of pullup to the flywheel, but I dont think having 1/8" would cause any issues.

Yea, I believe it may be a lockup converter.  I just wanted to make sure it was the converter and not somehting I may have missed on the install..lol...kind of like a sanity check, PTC is a great company but sometimes human error happens.

The 8" converter did not have much play from the converter to the flywheel on it as this one does.

1. Yes, it has a good 1/2-3/4" of play when unbolted, I had to add the spacers to get it to 1/8"

2. Honestly I did not verify pressure, but you are correct last click is the pump. Without the third click it wont let the Motor and trans come together.

3. Maybe they sent a converter with a lock up circuit in it and you have a non-lockup tranny and it's causing it to push fluid into the circuit and lock the clutch?
I think this is exactly what happened; it feels like it is locking up as soon as it goes into gear I even tried giving it a bit of throttle while putting it in gear to keep it on and it goes into gear violently, like an over exaggerated shift kit....lol..and it still turned the engine off in gear. :banghead:

Converter too tight against pump.

I installed the recommended minimum spacers/washers for 1/8" between the flywheel and TC, Should I try some thinner ones, to bring it away from the pump a bit?

Converter not fully seated.

This was one of my initial thoughts as well, however if it did not seat all the way, would it not be too loose and not engage instead? Perhaps I'm confused on this part.

Converted bad, clutch or something inside is locking it up.

Yes it feels like it locks up immediately.

I spoke with Lane a few minutes ago (Great Customer Service BTW) he said with all the specs they made it for it should transition into gear no problem. He went over all my paperwork and build sheet and everything seems to check out.

He did mention that if I send it back they can check in anything is wrong with it internally and re-stall if necessary.

Before I do that I want to make sure that it is not something on my end or something on the install.

I'll likely pull the TC out tomorrow and re-install just to make sure it seated all the way in (3-clicks).  Should I also use thinner spacers?

BTW thanks for the help Blake, I do appreciate the input.

Drivetrain / TC issues
« on: December 02, 2016, 10:49:58 AM »
Have an issue with a TC.

I swapped TC on the Mazda this past Saturday and something is not quite right.

I previously had an 8" Converter that I was pushing through, so I ordered a PTC 10.5 unit. Gave them my specs on the car and the drivetrain and had it to me within about a weeks time.

Weird thing is that now the car turns off as soon as I try to put it in gear.

First thing I thought is that it may be way too tight as I ordered it to stall at about 3000-3400. But turning off at idle to gear transition just does not make sense.

I tried taking out some idle timing, bumped it down to about 14* and it still turned off, added timing to about 32* still turned off. It does it when trying to go into D or R; so its pretty much as soon as it sees load.

Spacers between TC and flywheel are 1/8"

Only other thing that I can think of is that perhaps the TC did not sit in all the way in on three clicks.

Anyone else experience a similar problem?

I completely agree, I think sometimes we concentrate more on going fast, rather than making sure we have a healthy brake system to stop as needed. :drive:

Sorry forgot to follow up on this.

It was a bad Master Cylinder, replaced it and now all is good.

:o Lots of progress from when I last checked up on the thread.

The car is looking great!

One thing about your builds that I really like and respect is that you are a perfectionist down to the last bolt!

Cant wait to see it all done! I'm certain it will be a show quality car!

Cant believe I missed this one! Went through the thread, great current combination you put together and awesome future plans that you have for the car.

Real good current times on it as well! Seems like fast is never fast enough with these cars   :D

LOL , its really much easier than what it may seem or sound. I just like getting real world people feedback on things of this nature as they will be honest and straight forward.

A salesman or rep will just paint a pretty picture for you :D regardless of how bad their service or product is. :banghead:

Also, when the initial capital is available for a lump purchase, it makes bargaining so much easier.

IT is the way to go though, really is the way of the future! Plus from what I understand the pay is very nice! My cousin was an IT guy for a Bank and his starting salary was a bit over 70K, this was back in 2001

I used to do a bit of website development a while back and it really is amazing how far things have come. We rely on the web and technology so much that 90% of people and businesses cannot go through one day without it.

Right now I'm looking into a new Point of Sale System and if the system crashes or internet goes down then I cant slide cards  :'( just cash and it is very rare that cash is carried in today's age.

I was amazed at how Bitcoin took off and that's all virtual money  :o :o

Currently dealing with Motovicity, so far so good, they have real good pricing and they seem like real nice people.

The whole APP process was very quick as long as you have the correct paperwork that they require. :drive:

I did hit most of the brake lines and bleed areas with brake parts cleaner yesterday after I was done so I will see if I happen to spot a leak by tomorrow.
