I have an 86 fc and I put in a pinion snubber but even with 2 fender washers it still is about an inch from the pinion housing. It will have to be lowered so much that I will run out of threads on the snubber before I can preload it. Yes it is drilled where everyone else drilled theirs and I used the same Energy Suspension snubber. I only found 1 other person on rx7 forum who had the same problem but no one ever had any input on the cause. So anyone got any ideas?
-
Don't take offense to this, but I think you either A) don't have the same part or B) don't have it in the same place.
I used the Dorman part and put it forward on the diff (near the snout). The Dorman snubber is 3.5" tall, give or take. How tall is the Energy Suspension piece?
-
Here is the one I used. http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=1630.msg18706.html#msg18706. (http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=1630.msg18706.html#msg18706.) I found the dimple on the tunnel between the bins and drilled the hole on the dimple. From the picture it looks like it is 2 3/8". There were several how to threads on rx7 forum that used the same snubber I did and according to the threads they were able to preload it. The doorman snubber is over an inch longer, and I knew that it was longer I just couldn't figure out why others got the energy susp. one to fit and it wouldn't for me.

Yours looks to be in the wrong spot
^^^This is where I have mine as well.
Jasong,
Where yours is would be a better spot for pinion control but you might have to maybe mount the snubber to a metal spacer mounted to the floor board.
But, If that pinion mount lets loose you'll know it when it slams the snubber. It's enough force to push the floor board up. Ask me how I know.
-
a) wrong part. the energy one is a bit shorter than dorman 31052. (i bought the same snubber first)
b) it goes where the dimple is between the storage bins... pretty hard to mess that one up
-
Well I will swap out the energy susp. one for the doorman. I did drill dead center of the dimple. Here is one of the main forum threads that I used for my install, from rx7 forum http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=761710&highlight=pinion+snubber. (http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=761710&highlight=pinion+snubber.)

Yours is in the wrong spot too. I have a back seat and I drilled where a spot weld was about 2 or 3 inches farther forward. I had to trim about 1/4 inch off of the snubber to work it in there. It is about over where the rear stock pinion mount bolt is. It mounts where the snout flattens out.
Absolutely no wheel hop or clunking sounds. If Jon ever sends me his modified governor I'll get it in the air and show you.

You guys are a jinx. You got me curious so I jacked it up or tried, the floor jack has been giving me trouble for a while now, and it died. I was able to get a look where I have mine mounted and it is definitly farther forward. If there is a chassis difference between the bin and back seat model I don't know. You wouldn't think there would be.
Well, I'll head for HF friday and get a new jack and try that again and shoot some pics.

Mine is mounted in the forward spot between the bins as well. The Dorman works there, energy doesn't (apparently).
Glad to hear the mystery is resolved. :)
-
Either spot will work really.
I think the more forward one might be a little better but either way I ended up going this route http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=3659.0.html (http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=3659.0.html) which alleviates the need of the snubber altogether.

It'd be nice for someone to take a pic of their doorman snubber with a tape measure like i did so we can see just how much the difference is.
I had to add a few fender washers to take up the slack. Pulling the diff this winter though so I'll check it out.

About 2/3 of the way down in this posting http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=86.msg810.html#msg810 (http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=86.msg810.html#msg810) I show pictures of the pinion snubber install on my car. There's a picture of the Dorman "Help" product "Control Arm Bumper" #31052.

Great thread, Don. I wish I'd put a nickel in a jar for everytime I've referenced that thread, I'd have enough to buy that procharger I want. LOL.
If you take yours back apart take some pics of your radiator brackets for me. I'll be taking mine back apart sometime after the first of the year and I think I'll try your rad and fan setup.

I might be pulling it apart this winter. I'll take some pictures of the mounts. They're really nothing special though. Just some commercial grade angle iron bent 45 deg to make a holder.
