Title: fd3sls3 build: 416 stroker....56k take a nap
Post by: fd3sls3 on January 02, 2013, 10:33:07 PM
Well, I'm not on here much, but I figured I'd give this a shot. I bought my 93 rx7 touring in 2005. After applying some subtle modifications, and reliability modifications yielding 355rwhp, the rotary engine failed. I then rebuilt, 3mm apex seals, 99 spec turbos and all the other goodies etc etc, yielding 370rwhp, and that bit the dust 17k miles later. At which point I gave in, and turned to "the dark side" in February 2009. I purchased an ls2 out of a trailblazer ss, and a GTO transmission. Upon purchase I had a mild port, new head gaskets, and a decent cam on the stock 243 heads, hoping to squeeze a little more power from them, putting down (with valve floating issues) 431whp/410tq. The following winter, I came upon a set of dart pro 1 heads, and paired them with a solid lifter and heavier spring combo, which yielded a modest 470hp/425tq. Engine ran great for approximately 6k miles, but succumbed to a spun bearing due to lack of oil pressure at high rpm due to a restriction from the trasnmission cooler, which was sold to me as an r1 oil cooler (mistake on my end, noted). I was back to the drawing  board yet again, with the car back on jack stands, I had a decision to make. There had been a lot of money spent since acquiring the car, and as much as i love it, the constant down time, and nagging of my wife was really getting old to me. I made an executive decision, after putting my big boy pants on, I purchased a brand new bare LS3 block, and compstar rotating assembly. I then stepped up the plate again and contacted Tony Mamo, for some V2-230 heads, molested by Tony himself. During the process he also spec'ed a cam, and ported a fast 102 to meet the high rpm power demands I had set forth. At this point in time, the GTO transmission was no longer desired, due to the poor gear ratio spacing, So I contacted RPM transmissions, and purchased a level 6 T56 magnum transmission with F-Body tail housing, as well as a quick time bell housing. I then assembled the engine at a local machine shop. With a little down time and some more decisions to be made, i purchased a Samburg subframe, tranny mount, and rear diff mount, along with a radiator/OTR intake setup. Shortly there after I picked up a nick williams 102mm throttle body, a set of hinson's long tube 1 7/8 diameter headers, as well as a monster level 2 twin disc clutch. I then personally machined my engine/transmission mounts, while waiting a few weeks for my drive shaft shop 3.5in driveshaft to arrive. With all the pieces in hand, I set forth to assembling this conglomeration of parts into a working car, again. Now for the pictures...enjoy!

Great build and excellent hp/tq numbers!  I love how you used top notch parts througout.  Hopefully I can follow in your path soon.

With the QuickTime bellhousing do you need a spacer when you use a t56 ? I am using a QuickTime bellhousing with a Gto t56 and an Act twin disc. Do I need a spacer ?

I did, monster states no shim is required, but I noticed a problem when I measured the height differance between the quicktime and gto bellhosings.  The quicktime was .100 taller, so I called monster and expained the issue, and they gave me the measurement they wanted to see.  I endes up making a .145 shim (IIRC).. which is so thick, the slave couldnt locate off of it (hence why i countersunk it-using the shim as a locatable feature). I would suggest calling the manufacturer and seeing what they recommend for a distance -from then do some measuring. (Also note- the Quicktime Bellhousing hangs approx 3/4 of an inch below the oil pan- I milled mine flush/ exhaust longtube headers (hinson) also wouldnt clear- had to clearance the left side of bellhousing).

Thanks for the comments! Its been alot of work -to but I am very pleased with the outcome!

-Can you comment on your impression of how the Hinson headers would have fit if you'd been running a standard bellhousing?

-What was needed to hook up your brake booster on the backside of the Fast 102?

-Did you manage to wedge the MAP in back?

I want to know how many people in 2013 are still running a 56k modem....

Edit: Read the thread and wanted to say "WOW!"

The headers would have cleared with no issue with a standard bellhousing...unfortunately ..the quicktime maintains the diameter all the way around- which doesnt accomodate for long tubes (i cant speak for mid-length, as they had already been sold).  Ill upload a picture later of the clearancing with the quicktime- it will better explain where its tight.

As for the brake booster hose, i was able to "massage" the firewall to make a nice transition with the rubber hose- no sharp bends, though it does touch the firewall. (Remember- its solid mounted-movement is nill)

I opted to run the MAP in the front, i made a bracket to secure it to where the throttle cable normally bolts to, and ran silicone hose from it over to the nipple on the front drivers side of the fast 102.

I will try to post up a video as well later today.

Thanks!  I stuck with the FD diff as I had already installed the KAAZ 1.5 way, so I bought a set of 3.90's to help out.  I'm hoping it will hold up, I'm thinking between the Samburg diff mount and 300M axle bars, I "should" be good (not running slicks ever).  I intend on occasionally running the 1/4 (on street tires, as I only care what it can do from a daily standpoint).  The car was more intended for the occasional track-day/ weekend cruiser.  I have only put 1K miles on the setup before the dreaded snowfall in central NY, I do want to re-check my drive-line angles (notice the increasing drive-train noise around 155 mph+), I'm assuming that is the culprit, though I know the diff mount will send resonation through the body of the car- anybody who has experienced a similar situation, please chime in!

Great, great powertrain, very similar to what some of the race cars we help out are running.  With an investment like that I'd hope you're at least going to put an Accusump on it.

Sounds amazing, and that 65-170 run was great, 4th moves the fuck out haha.

I'm also running a Kaaz diff that I actually pulled out of a 7yr old race car, they hold up to power great.  I'm interested to see what you find on the driveline vibrations, could be ring gear wear, but could also be the fact that the engine and trans are solid mounted and the diff is bushed front and back... I'd solid mount that sucker.

I still need to do an accusump....hopefully over the winter ...(i had all i could do to get some miles on it before snowfall).  It pulls pretty good...the diff is mounted with delrin on the rear points and poly (IIRC) on justins brace...ill have to make something for at least the front one ...i think the delein is solid enough (thoughts?).

I have no idea what it currently traps at.....all of the tracks where closed for the winter by time ot was out...lol.... ill have a # this spring for sure!

Thanks!, Honestly-as stupid as it sounds, its hard to say.  The car was down for 1.5 yrs after the blown engine.  It definitely feels faster, but i wish I had a back-to-back drive!  1/4 trap speed will say alot.......spring cant come soon enough!!

I assume your talking about mileage per engine... not MPG.... yea, it sucks.... guess it comes with the territory. Hopefully the new engine will last...    pretty sure i fixed the oiling issue the prev engine had....   I enjoy working on it-for the most part (though my wallet doesnt)

VERY nice setup!!  That thing must be a blast to drive.

I'd guess you'll trap between 138-142, err on the higher side of that.

I see a 8.8 setup in your future!! :)

Were you running the 99 spec fuel tank baffle originally? If so, what made you change to the hyperion part?
Title: Re: fd3sls3 build: 416 stroker....56k take a nap
Post by: fd3sls3 on February 15, 2013, 06:35:39 AM
It does add a nice touch, allows you to get things just right.   I bought hyperions baffle back in 2010....and didnt install it (too lazy)... my gas gauge stopped working- after 8 months of that....got sick of it.  Upon dissasembly, I found the factory baffle broke....knocking the float iff the sending unit.  I didnt want to deal with welding it...couldnt find a good used tank.... so I bought a new one from mazda.  They only sell the newest revision (99 spec- which had the factory baffle)..  after comparing the 99 spec vs hyperions....  hyperions got installed.

Thanks for the back story. It appeared from your post as though you were swapping it as the 99 was not sufficient. Makes sense to fit the Hyperion if you already have it though.

Ended up getting it re-dynoed by New England dyno (Hagerty tune)....  Apparently the old dyno wasn't set at SAE... So needless to say , it was actually lower than thought .

Results are...  Initial pull...   537/ 474 (SAE corrected)
                     Final pull ...    558/ 494 (SAE corrected)

Definite solid gains from 4500-6k... Solid 20/20 gain through out.  Peaks about 6800... And carries good till 7k..  Dropping slightly at 7200.  Exactly what I was trying to achieve!
