Title: High Engine temp
Post by: rex388 on April 30, 2012, 10:32:40 PM
Hey guys, I was just wondering what all you guys have done to enough you don't over heat.  Cause it was only like 20 degrees outside today and even when highway driving (100kmph) my car wouldn't drop below 195.  It stayed around 190-200.  I was thinking of making a bottom fan shroud from my bumper to the rad to help insure that all air moves through my rad and not deflect below it.  I have one on the top already.  But I mean my fan is on all the time and if I can't think of something I will be in trouble come summer.  Thanks in advance.

What do you have for a fan shroud right now? My car ran hella hot last summer because my shroud was insufficient (it was too close to the radiator to be really effective).

195 to 200 really isn't that hot. What do you have for a thermostat?

I have a piece of sheet metal that I ran from the bumper to the rad up top.  I have a 165f thermostat.  But I mean I live just above you in Manitoba and it wasn't that hot today.  I am worried about June,July,August.

Where is your temp sender located?
Sometimes block temps can be deceiving. I have mine in the intake manifold but I'm also running a Gen1 SBC.

My build is very close to what you're running and I'm in Wisconsin.
My temps so far have been no higher than 180. I'm not running a lower shroud but do have a shroud to the top of the radiator.

I run 50/50 coolant with water wetter.
I'm running the Ford Taurus 2 speed fan and it works great.

Oh one other thing, make sure your timing is not retarded.
It could run very rich and extremely hot if you don't have it set correctly.

help to know what Tstat you are running

I have a becool aluminium rad was the same Taurus fan. I have 18 degrees initial, 36 at 3000. Is your rad also on an angle. Mine is tilted forward.

O ya and thermostat is plugged in front driverside of the intake.

Nick's car got to like 260 degrees today... Probably hotter since the sender was only reading steam.  Is that too hot?

My thermostat is a 160 HiFlow with a small weep hole drilled into it.

My water pump is a short aluminum HiFlow.
I'm running a billet 7" overdrive pulley off the balancer. I'll have to measure the billet pulley off the water pump but I know it's smaller than stock.

I looked at your picture and your temp sender is pretty much the same as mine.

Your timing is pretty much the same as mine.

As someone specified earlier 195-200 is really not too hot. But, as long as it maintains that temp and not really any higher than 220 you should be good.

My car will get to 190 on the highway running at 3000 RPM for an extended period of time. But, as soon as I get off the throttle to 2500RPM or off the highway it cools to around 170-180 right away.

When I am on the highway I have it in 4th and the lockup on around 2500 only. And it doesn't cool down. Is your rad straight up and down? Cause mine is on a bit of an angle and I am wondering if that has something to do with it. Like when the air hits it to hits it and gets forced under my car instead of through the rad.

Sorry, I forgot to answer that question before.
Yes my radiator sits straight up and down and I have the sides blocked from any airflow around but not the bottom.
My radiator is a Griffin aluminum 27x19 single pass 2" from Summit.

Depends on your meaning of hot.
Hot like Roxy's friend is too hot.  :P
Hot like lets see what happens when it reaches 260 and find the new holes it creates? Not too hot.  :barf:

So would I be out to lunch by making a bottom fan shroud than? To help aid in pushing all the air through the rad?

I think you should make a bottom fan shroud if your rad is tilted.

Does the car cool down when you're sitting at idle?

Another thing, make sure you have no air in the system.

Ya at idle it drops down to 170 if I sit for say like 5 - 10 minutes.

Do you still have the bottom tray for your car?
If so you might want to put that in as well with your fabbed shroud.

Bottom tray. I think that is a negative.

I have consistently seen a 15-20* F drop in water temperature at highway speeds on the 3 cars I have put lower shrouds on to push air into the radiator.    Definitely worth doing if the car can cool itself down at a stop.

Put that stock lower shroud on. I had the same problem. Hotter at speed and cools right down when sitting with the fan on. I put the shroud on and it's always cool now. I have my fan on a switch temporarily and I don't have to switch it on as much now when moving.
