ls3 fd build
« on: February 20, 2011, 12:33:28 AM »
Hey guys, always wanted to start a build thread and now I can  8). I decided last October I would part with my perfectly running rotary for a few reasons. 1. it was sadly cheaper to do this swap then to go single turbo with all supporting mods(if I included part out money) and 2. peace of mind. The car made 317 rwhp on a dyno dynamics on stock sequential twins and managed a 12.8 @ 114mph, but of course I wanted more.

I decided on the ls3 seeing as it will get me to where I want to get for power. I am going to throw it in with bolt ons for now and see how I like it and maybe a cam down the road. So here is to the start I will update as I progress...and of course when I have questions  :D.

Here is some pics, I am basically waiting on parts to arrive should start showing up this upcoming week. I will update as they arrive.

made one last cruise before I started, with a supporting wife...well kinda haha

sold/pulled the old motor

made a mess and started parting out the rest

pressure washed everything I could reach, figured I might as well while its all apart.

before

after, I couldnt believe how clean everything came so quickly.

ls3 with 48 miles on it  :)

SWEET!...LS3 will be awesome, I wish I would have gone this route before I jumped on the LS1. Either way, good luck and you are blessed to have a supporting wife lol :)

Dude. LS3 FD FTW. So sick. Sweet car, motor, and chick. Subscribed for updates  BTW 12.8/114 mph is very respectable for a street driven car, as far as I'm concerned. Best of luck, keep us updated.  8)

EDIT: one more thing: looks like your running RPF1 wheels. What size (width, diameter, offset) and tire (width, aspect ratio, brand/model) are you running? I'm considering getting a set....

Thanks, I feel I could have gotten a better time out of the car with better tires, it was when I was on stock rims. I love the rpf1's they look way better in person(have more depth to them than I thought they would) they are 9.5 +45 all around I do wish the back was a little more agressive so I will probably add a little spacer.

Excellent start, good lookin car (and wife!) and as was mentioned, 12.8 quarter for a rotary with stock twins is nice!  LS3 is a fantastic start, what'd that low mileage pullout cost ya?

Lastly, do a cam/springs/retainers for the love of all things beastly.

Thanks for the compliments! I picked up this ls3 for 3800, the swap should be complete with about 12k(or atleast I think) so this swap minus parting out my car will cost me roughly 5k but I am sure I will get 50 and 100 dollar'd to death near the completion.

A guy local bought a new camaro and pulled the motor for an ls7 swap so that left me with a motor with 48 miles  :D.

No real update yet, I got by ls3 controller kit but still waiting on other parts to show up.

update!

Samberg kit all powder coated and ready to go in.

close up of the color, I am really happy with the choice.

ls3 controller kit, I plugged it all in to get an idea of where everything goes and how exactly I am going to extend it to the rear bins

everything is labeled and it comes with fan and fuel pump out puts, even an led if a code pops up.

wilwood modified clutch master and a new slave from Hinson great guys minus their packing skills.

Well hopefully next post I have these all in the car, all this stuff kinda came at once so I now have my hands full  :D

Well finally have five days off to continue working on my project. I got most things removed for painting the engine bay(still more to do), which is happening this Sunday. I got a drill bit made for spot welds from harbor freight for the side brackets, it worked really well, not bad for five bucks.  Here is some more pics of my mess.....
